Hopely farm - community outreach
On Saturday, 7 August 2010 at 10 a.m., the Champions for Life Community Outreach team heads for Hopely Farm, one of Zimbabwe’s poorest communities 10km south of Harare.
With over 5,000 children residing in this resettlement area, the mission is to bring reformation to a ravaged community while distributing supplies and blankets to keep the vast amount of children warm in the cold winter months. Most of who are orphaned and vulnerable to the dangers of their harsh surroundings.
Gift Makwala, Champions for Life Project Manager, has been reaching-out and building Champions for almost two years; organizing countless outreach events every weekend. He’s witnessed the endless fruits and benefits of such community projects.
“An event of like this, of such high numbers, will remind me of when we visited Mathare in Nairobi, Kenya; Africa’s second largest slum,” said Makwala. “All the kids in Mathare, like Hopely, come from very poor backgrounds… But when we build-up, affirm, listen and support them they realized their life has purpose and doesn’t have to remain hopeless. They realize they can be anything they want to be… Some want to be doctors, others teachers, etc…”
This special Champion outreach event with will consist of a combination of teams; Champions for Life, Celebration Hopely Church and the Borrowdale Youth Arena team, led by Pastor Tommy Deuschle and his youth leaders.
